A Vindication of Desire: St Anselm, with C. S. Lewis

Despite different starting points, in the cloister and world respectively, Anselm of Canterbury (1033-1109) C. S. Lewis (1898–1963) enjoyed a mutual interest concept experience spiritual desire. Inspired by Lewis’ famous sermon, ‘The Weight Glory’ (1941), but principally guided Anselm’s reflections, this essay argues that desire exists dynamic relationship with love that, as journey desire, Christian life is extremely challenging, since it into mystery towards moral perfection, also contains ultimately fulfils God’s promise eternal joy. It hoped one by-product exploration may be to accord greater recognition spiritual, even mystical, theologian, recognising him Jean Leclercq’s description an earlier monastic leader, Gregory Great (d. 604), ‘doctor desire’.
